Frequently AskeD QUESTIONS

What is personal branding photography?

Personal branding photography is a private session for business owners. These sessions may focus on you personally, your products or a little bit of both! These sessions are less formal than a headshot session. Personal branding sessions should focus on showing off your personality and style! I like to think of them as business lifestyle sessions!

Personal branding photography images may be used on your social media. They also could appear on your website, in advertisements or in marketing materials. Any place you want to market your business, they need a quality photograph!
Who needs personal branding photography? Perhaps you’re a fitness expert, consultant, coach, or model? The possibilities are endless. I’ve also shot for social media influences, DJs, Yoga instructors, psychics, to everyday small business owners, musicians, authors or food bloggers. Almost any entrepreneur can benefit from a well-planned branding session with a skilled photographer, and you’ve found one in Modern Aperture!

What types of headshots are there?

There are a few different types of headshots you may be asked to take.

These include:

  • Traditional headshots
  • Environmental portraits
  • Personal branding images

Traditional headshots are usually head and shoulders or half-body shots taken against a traditional or white (which Modern Aperture prefers) background.

Environmental portraits are portraits taken in the natural environment of the subject. A realtor, for example, might request an environmental portrait taken in a house listed for sale. A makeup artist would request a portrait taken in their studio. They are usually head and shoulders or half body portraits but could be a different composition per your request.

Personal branding images are more casual type of environmental portrait. These types of sessions create imagery for social media influencers that they can use to promote their business.

Headshot sessions can be completed with natural light or studio lighting, depending on your preference as well as our suggestion.

Why is photography important for personal branding?

People crave connections with other people.  No longer are we content to simply give our money to the lowest priced competitor.  We want to know the person behind the products and services we invest in.  Savvy business owners recognize the power of connection in their and have turned to Modern Aperture to help build their brand.

High-quality or in marketing efforts will help you as a business owner or public figure tell your unique story.  Personal branding images convey personality and warmth and help build a connection between you and the audience.  Finally, imagery helps build a brand and position your business as authentic and honest.

Professional photographs also convey a sense of trust and investment in the business.  Honestly, how inclined would you be to trust someone who’s branding consists of phone eating tacos?  Quirky images and everyday cell snaps have a place.  But a high-level brand needs high-level photography!

How do I plan a personal brand photoshoot? What questions should I ask before a branding photo session?

A personal branding photography session usually begins with a consultation with you or a representative of your business/figure identity. This can be done via e-mail or phone. My preference is a face-to-face meeting. I like to begin building camaraderie and trust right away. I want to find out:

  • What style of images would you like (candid versus more styled poses)
  • What “look” or editing style are you drawn towards (light and airy, dark and moody, etc)
  • How the images will be used
  • What image type you are seeking…portraits, products, flat lays, landscapes, action, etc.
  • What your goals are for the photoshoot
  • What are your goals for your business
  • Personal details about you…favorite activities, books, movies or music
  • Your why
  • Who is your ideal client
  • What inspires you
  • Who do you admire and look up to?
  • Details about your business…when did it start, what services do you offer, what services do you want to offer in the future, etc.

These pre-session interviews can also help draw out your personality. Are you warm and bubbly? More serious and pensive? I won’t just hear the answers I give you, but rather get to know you as a person and that’s important to me.

Finally, we’re ready to nail down the details of the photoshoot. We will also discuss location, wardrobe, and props. All of these will tie into the look of your session and help lend authenticity to your brand.

How do I prepare for a personal branding session?

I encourage clients to prepare for their photoshoot by focusing on self-care and leave the portrait details to me. I encourage them to do the following, at least those in keeping with their personality and brand.

  • Get a manicure or pedicure
  • Finalize their wardrobe, including ironing and locating accessories
  • Gathering any products or props they might want to use
  • Groom and/or exercise animals if they are to be incorporated into the session
  • Tidy the house or yard for home-based shoots
  • Get some rest
  • Drink lots of water
  • Practice run makeup and hairstyles or book styling appointments
